MGI Prepares for Solid Waste Community Engagement Project in Cassava Piece, St Andrew

The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI) recently conducted a site visit in the Cassava Piece Community in Kingston, Jamaica as preparations got underway for the Participatory Solid Waste Management project in that community. The project is being led by Island City Lab, a local non-profit organization that is focusing on responding to critical urban issues facing Jamaica and the rest of the world.

As part of this project which is set to begin in February 2024, MGI will conduct a skills training workshop in which we will provide drone training to community members, conduct physical land use mapping in Cassava Piece, map solid waste hotspots in the community and provide geospatial visualizations based on the findings.

MGI looks forward to working on this initiative as it aims to implement holistic and integrated initiatives in waste detection, collection, and disposal within the Cassava Piece community as well as build transformational change through community engagement and involvement in project activities, as solid waste remains a constant threat to both terrestrial and marine habitats.
