Strengthening Earthquake Awareness with GIS

On January 31, 2025, MGI’s Executive Director, Luke Buchanan, delivered an insightful lecture on Earthquake Awareness and the Role of GIS in Jamaica to the Ministry of Tourism and key stakeholders.

Titled Natural Hazards in Jamaica (A Focus on Earthquakes), the lecture covered:

  • Jamaica’s natural hazard landscape
  • Earthquake science and history in Jamaica
  • The role of GIS in earthquake mitigation
  • Potential risks to tourism assets in an earthquake scenario
  • A simulation of how the 1907 earthquake would impact Jamaica today

Supporting this initiative was Romario Anderson, MGI’s Projects Manager.

This lecture was part of the Tourism Policy and Monitoring Branch’s “Planet Talks Lecture Series”, promoting sustainability and resilience through knowledge-sharing.
