MGI maintains an active partnership with The Ocean Cleanup to support the prevention, monitoring, and assessment of solid waste entering Jamaica’s coastal environment. As part of this collaboration, MGI delivers a suite of geospatial, technical, and environmental services that strengthen data-driven coastal management and pollution mitigation efforts.
Key services provided by MGI include:
Drone-based monitoring for assessing mangrove health, detecting solid waste accumulation, and identifying plastic pollution hotspots along waterways and coastal areas.
Installation and operation of camera systems to continuously monitor the flux and movement of solid waste, particularly at critical points such as gullies, drains, and river mouths.
Measurement of hydrological and coastal parameters, including water discharge rates and bathymetric surveys, to better understand sediment transport, flow dynamics, and potential waste pathways.
This partnership plays a crucial role in supporting The Ocean Cleanup’s broader goals of reducing ocean-bound plastic and promoting sustainable waste management practices through locally adapted technologies and scientific monitoring in Jamaica.
