Teleconnected SARgassum risks across the Atlantic: building capacity for TRansformational Adaptation in the Caribbean and West Africa
A three-year program of research (Nov. 2019 – Oct. 2022) funded by the Economic and Social Research Council Global Challenges Research Fund (ESRC GCRF) that is being delivered through a collaboration among the University of Southampton, University of Ghana, University of West Indies and University of York.
The focus is on the “potential role of Sargassum in offering a transformational opportunity to the poorest communities in sargassum affected areas in the Tropical Atlantic Basin”.
MGI is primarily involved in developing 2 key outputs: (a) an operational and near real-time monitoring and dissemination system for Sargassum strandings, (b) policy draft for managing Sargassum strandings risk. Also, analysis of the current approaches to monitoring sargassum through remotely sensed data is being undertaken to highlight weaknesses and strengths and to identify ways to improve current monitoring processes.
