Capacity building via a community-based approach to enhance environmental monitoring and enforcement in the Montego Bay Marine Park (MBMP)
Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI) implemented a project aimed at enhancing the protection and management of the Montego Bay Marine Park Special Fishery Conservation Area through the strategic use of drone technology and community-based environmental monitoring. The initiative involved training park rangers, marine police, fisherfolk, and community members in drone operations to monitor the health and coverage of critical coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs. These drones, equipped with advanced sensors, provided near real-time data to support ecological research and management. Additionally, MGI engaged youth and women using a citizen science approach to monitor shoreline changes through the installation and use of CoastSnap stations, allowing for community-driven tracking of coastal erosion. This integrated approach combined technology, capacity building, and public participation to support long-term environmental stewardship and resilience within the Marine Park.
