It was a wonderful opportunity for the Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI) to participate in the Ministry of Tourism’s 2024 Spatial Solutions Summit. As we continue to explore innovative solutions for national development, we firmly believe that GeoAI is a key driver for the growth of geospatial sciences in Jamaica and the region. Its potential to transform industries, improve decision-making, and address critical challenges is important.
The theme, “Harnessing Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) for Tourist Experience Enhancement: From Data to Destination,” was both timely and fitting. GeoAI has the power to revolutionize the tourism sector by enabling more personalized, efficient, and sustainable travel experiences. From optimizing tourist routes to predicting trends and improving resource management, the integration of GeoAI promises to create a more dynamic and data-driven approach to tourism development in Jamaica.
MGI’s Executive Director, Mr. Luke Buchanan, who attended the summit, welcomed the initiative by the Ministry of Tourism, emphasizing the importance of taking an informed, data-driven approach as Jamaica continues to strengthen its tourism sector. Mr. Buchanan outlined that “tourism is not only one of the country’s largest sources of foreign exchange but also a vital pillar of economic development.” He further pointed out that the sector’s resilience and growth are integral to Jamaica’s broader development goals, and that leveraging advanced technologies like GeoAI will be crucial in optimizing tourism management, enhancing visitor experiences, and promoting sustainable practices for long-term success.
At the summit, it was highlighted how #GeoAI can not only enhance the visitor experience but also contribute to sustainable tourism practices and support the broader economic and environmental goals of #Jamaica. It was inspiring to see the energy and commitment towards harnessing this transformative technology for Jamaica’s future both from people in the room and participants online.
At MGI we are working with tourism stakeholders within the industry by integrating GIS and GeoAI technologies to improve operational efficiency, enhance visitor experiences, foster sustainable development, and support data-driven decision-making across all levels of the tourism sector. Importantly, MGI at UWI Mona is currently collaborating with Target Euro Srl (Italy) to carry out an island-wide geospatial survey of community tourism enterprises (CTEs), with the goal of creating a comprehensive tourism asset inventory for Jamaica’s tourism industry.
