Drone Training gets underway at the Montego Bay Marine Park Trust in Montego Bay, Jamaica

In February 2025, the Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI) launched UAV/drone training for the Montego Bay Marine Park Trust in Montego Bay, St. James. This initiative is part of a collaborative project aimed at enhancing the MBMPT’s capacity to monitor and manage the Montego Bay Marine Park. By integrating drone technology, the project strengthens monitoring and enforcement efforts within the Special Fisheries Conservation Area while also supporting the assessment of various marine ecosystems throughout the park.

The training is being conducted by MGI’s Lead UAV Trainer, Mr. Darren Fletcher, and Assistant UAV Trainer, Miss Andreena Williams. MGI has developed and is currently delivering a hybrid program covering both introductory and advanced drone operations, including flight planning, data acquisition, and advanced UAV applications. Participants include park rangers, community members, marine police, and fisherfolk, equipping them with drone expertise to facilitate capacity building and long-term sustainability.

The project is funded by the UK’s Blue Social Challenge Fund and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This collaboration highlights the importance of international partnerships in addressing environmental challenges and building resilient coastal communities.
