I have always maintained that Geography is one of the most important sciences, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is among the most powerful technologies of our time. The 2026 FIFA World Cup serves as a prime illustration of the importance of geographical perspective and spatial reasoning, highlighting the substantial benefits that GIS brings to the world of football (soccer). The FIFA World Cup 2026 runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, and is jointly hosted across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This is the first time in history that the tournament is being staged across three nations, creating enormous logistical challenges involving transportation, security, accommodation, crowd management, and the movement of millions of fans. GIS is the master of logistics, helping organizers visualize routes, monitor live traffic conditions, map critical facilities, and optimize transportation networks. Studies have shown that spatial optimization can reduce transportation costs by as much as 15% while improving on-time performance and visitor satisfaction. “GIS is one of those major scientific disciplines that has become so deeply integrated into our daily lives that we often take it for granted. Modern football generates vast amounts of spatial data through GPS devices, video analytics, and tracking systems, allowing teams to better understand player movements, tactics, and performance. Some of the key areas where GIS is being applied in football include: Leading clubs such as Manchester City, Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona and others have embraced spatial analytics to gain a competitive advantage. GPS and video data allow coaches and analysts to monitor player positions, passing networks, sprint locations, and movement patterns in real time. This information supports better decision-making in recruitment, tactical planning, and player development. GIS-based heat maps have become an important analytical tool, helping coaches identify high-intensity zones, defensive vulnerabilities, and attacking opportunities. By examining how players occupy space during matches, teams can refine formations and improve overall performance. Youth academies are also benefiting, using spatial analysis to develop tactical awareness and decision-making skills among young players. The technology extends far beyond the field of play. Major sporting events increasingly depend on GIS for crowd management, transportation planning, and public safety. During recent international tournaments, spatial analysis tools helped organizers monitor fan movements, reduce congestion, and improve transportation efficiency between stadiums, fan zones, and accommodation areas. The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI), at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, was represented by Executive Director Luke Buchanan at the Regional Fisheries and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Learning Exchange held in the Dominican Republic from June 9–11, 2026. Notably, MGI was the only institution representing Jamaica among participants from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Co-convened by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) and the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), the exchange brought together researchers, practitioners, community partners, and technical experts to share experiences and strengthen collaboration in support of resilient coastal communities and sustainable fisheries across the Caribbean. During the exchange, MGI presented its work under the Kingston Harbour Ecosystem Adaptation Model (KHEAM) project, highlighting ecosystem-based adaptation approaches being implemented in Jamaica. The presentation sparked valuable discussions on fisheries resilience, coastal ecosystem restoration, and community engagement. Across the three-day event, participants explored topics including small-scale fisheries, the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF), co-management, community participation, gender-responsive value chains, alternative livelihoods, and marine protected areas. MGI also shared lessons from its work in Jamaica, including initiatives in the Montego Bay Marine Park and broader efforts to strengthen coastal resilience. The learning exchange concluded with a field visit to Laguna Limón in Miches, Dominican Republic, where participants observed mangrove restoration efforts, sustainable fishing practices, and innovative community enterprises led by women, including fish processing, soap production, and beekeeping. Executive Director Luke Buchanan outlined that “It was a privilege to participate in this regional learning exchange and to represent Jamaica and MGI among such a diverse group of practitioners and experts. The workshop highlighted the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and community engagement in strengthening coastal resilience and sustainable fisheries across the Caribbean. During this time, tropical storms and hurricanes form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, often bringing heavy rainfall, flooding, landslides, and damaging winds across the Caribbean region. Early climate outlooks suggest that large-scale climate patterns may shape the 2026 season, particularly the potential transition toward El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions in the Pacific Ocean. When El Niño develops, it typically increases vertical wind shear over the Atlantic, which can reduce the likelihood of storm formation or intensification. However, even during El Niño years, major hurricanes can still develop, especially when sea surface temperatures across the Atlantic remain unusually warm. 2026 Tropical Cyclone Names Each Atlantic hurricane season follows a pre-established list of storm names maintained by the World Meteorological Organization. For the 2026 season, the list includes 21 rotating names that are assigned sequentially to tropical storms as they form. The full list of names for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is: Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal. While El Niño can increase vertical wind shear across the Atlantic and sometimes suppress storm formation, Jamaica and the wider Caribbean can still experience significant tropical cyclone impacts, particularly as Atlantic sea surface temperatures remain unusually warm. These conditions can contribute to intense rainfall, flash flooding, landslides, and rapid storm intensification. This reinforces the importance of preparedness, climate monitoring, and geospatial hazard analysis for small island states like Jamaica.” El Niño conditions are often associated with drier-than-normal weather across Jamaica and parts of the Caribbean. During an El Niño event, rainfall can decrease significantly, leading to prolonged dry periods, drought conditions, reduced river flows, and declining water levels in reservoirs and catchment areas. These impacts can contribute to water shortages affecting households, agriculture, and hydroelectric generation, while also increasing the risk of bush fires, heat stress, and reduced agricultural productivity. For small island states like Jamaica, strong drought preparedness and water resource management become especially important during El Niño periods.
